The Wadsworth Mansion, with its stunning grounds and timeless elegance, offers couples an incredible variety of ceremony locations. We have performed at the Mansion countless times and are always in awe of how every wedding there is still so unique.

Each ceremony space comes with its own unique ambiance, so the Wadsworth truly provides endless possibilities - you can't go wrong! If you’re reading this, chances are that you’re planning your wedding at the Wadsworth Mansion and I know you’re here to sneak a peek at how past Ariana Strings couples have personalized their weddings!

I'm Ariana, lead violinist and owner of Ariana Strings. I've performed for over 700 weddings since 2010 and have performed at the Wadsworth Mansion more times than I can count. Here, I'm sharing ten Wadsworth Mansion ceremony options, along with examples of weddings that have utilized each setting. I'm also including how our musicians have set up for each scenario, what to consider, and photos and videos.

The Tennis Pavilion & Rose Garden at The Wadsworth Mansion

  1. Facing the Tennis Pavilion

This arrangement provides a stunning view of the tennis pavilion as the backdrop for your vows. With the lush rose garden framing the ceremony, it’s a perfect blend of natural beauty and architectural charm. Many couples opt to decorate the columns, but even when left bare, it's regal.

Example: Shannon and Tory’s wedding beautifully showcased this setup, with guests seated amidst the blooming roses and the pavilion creating a romantic focal point.

  • Depending on the time of day and the season, our musicians may need to move to find shade, compared to what you see here. We've set up behind the guests, to the left, and even to the right.

  • We have performed here in every configuration: Solo violin, string duet, string trio, and string quartet. Ultimately, the intimacy of the space is really beautiful, so you can go with any size acoustic ensemble. If you plan on having cocktail hour here, as well, amplifying the instruments is a really nice option.

Tip: Make sure to wear bug spray. Though it doesn't seem it, it's a pretty wooded area and I'll never forget the time a little fly decided to fly into my ear while I was performing as our bride walked down the aisle. Funny thing is that the photographer caught that in a photo (you'll see it in the gallery below), it just looks like I'm shrugging!

  1. Facing the Roses (Backs to the Mansion)

For couples who want their guests to be immersed in the beauty of the garden, this layout places the roses as the ceremony’s centerpiece.

Example: Maryelizabeth and Chris opted for this arrangement for their early June wedding and it was incredible. The roses were in full bloom anad created a naturally gorgeous backdrop. Photo credit: Joanna Fisher Photography.

We performed You Are My Sunshine, as a tribute to her late father, for Maryelizabeth's walk down the aisle.

  1. Facing the Roses (Facing the Mansion)

This setup is not often done, but it's really sweet: The ceremony altar is framed by the pine trees and mansion in the background.

Alison and Chris chose this arrangement for their mini ceremony in 2020, creating a picturesque view for both their guests and their photos.

All About The Great Lawn at The Wadsworth Mansion

  1. Facing the The Great Lawn

The most popular option, by far, the expansive great lawn offers an open-air setting with breathtaking views of the Mansion’s sprawling grounds. Facing the back lawn allows for an elegant, natural backdrop.

Most couples arrange for a water station (much needed, in Summer) and have lounge furniture and decor on the patio for guests to enjoy before walking down to the ceremony chairs. Getting married in the Fall? Ask your caterer about a hot cider station.

Example: Jessica and Nick’s wedding, styled by Wildflower Events, showcased this setup with its vast, picturesque scenery. Photo credit: Jennifer Nichole Photography with Wildflower Events.

Things to consider:

  • Depending on the time of day, this space may be in full sun or half-shaded. In the height of Summer, we've seen guests faint from being in the direct sun for even a short ceremony. Other times, I've seen guests get up in the middle of the ceremony to stand in the shade (and some brought their chairs with them!)

  • Idea for Summer events: One of our couples graciously set up patio umbrellas throughout the seating to shade their guests and it was a big hit.

  • There is a school a ways away and, on rare occasions, you can hear a sports game in the distance. It's usually wrapped up well before a ceremony starts, but I recommend making sure your officiant has a microphone to help keep the focus nearby.

We usually set up in the shade of the trees as seen here. You can see the sunlight through the trees is a bit patchy, but we found a fully shaded spot to safely perform. I've performed in this spot as a soloist (both acoustic violin and electric violin), as a violin and cello duet, violin and guitar duet, string trio, string quartet, and with drums. Depending on the vibe you'd like (and whether or not you're having us stay on for cocktail hour), acoustic or amplified will work beautifully here.

  1. From the Patio, Facing the Great Lawn

For a different perspective, couples can choose to have their ceremony on the patio facing away from the Mansion. This setup highlights the surrounding greenery and natural beauty.

Annie and Steven’s wedding utilized this unique arrangement, creating an inviting atmosphere for their guests. We performed as an amplified string trio, which was a lifesaver since it was such a windy day.

Things to consider:

Guests really appreciate that there isn't such a long walk across the grass, which is helpful for guests wearing high heels and especially for those who use mobility aids. As mentioned before, depending on the time of day, this spot can have little shade. This is a great option for that "borderline" weather (Will it rain, or won't it?), so guests can dash inside if you're willing to risk it.  If you plan to utilize this space for your reception, your DJ and bar will likely be set up on either side already.

Below are two videos from this very wedding. Video credit Barnberry Productions (Wildest Dreams).

  1. From The Patio, Facing the Building

This setup utilizes the Mansion’s patio as a ceremony site, with its stately facade serving as an impressive backdrop. Just like in #5, being located on the patio is very convenience.

Example: During a violin and guitar duet wedding ceremony, this layout allowed the architecture to take center stage while still providing an intimate setting.

  1. The Exedrae at The Wadsworth Mansion

The Exedrae is a hidden gem that offers a more secluded, garden-style setting for ceremonies. I've only seen two wedding ceremonies like this and they were stunning. Surrounded by nature, it’s perfect for couples seeking a private, intimate space.

When the exedrae garden is in full bloom like this, it is so so beautiful. Florals lining the aisle and supplemental pedestals are just the icing on the cake.

Be aware that it is a long walk - but it is absolutely stunning. Consider your guests mobility needs and requirements before selecting this spot. There are parking spaces nearby, so planning in advance will really help your guests enjoy this beautiful spot.

Depending on the time of day, shade in this area can be limited. You may want to consider bringing umbrellas or planning your ceremony for just before golden hour, for comfort in those hot Summer months.

Example: Terry-Ann and Mike’s wedding took advantage of this tranquil spot, creating a magical atmosphere for their vows.

Wedding Ceremony in Front of the Wadsworth Mansion

  1. In Front of the Mansion

This style of ceremony just became popular in the last 3 years and has quickly become a personal favorite. Placing the ceremony directly in front of the Mansion combines the grandeur of its facade with the intimacy of its entrance. This setup is ideal for couples looking for a dramatic and elegant statement.

Things to consider: When guests arrive, it keeps them from entering the reception space early (Well, it doesn't encourage them to go into the building.) However, if you plan to have photos in front of the mansion before the cermeony, you'll need to work closely with your photographer and planner to ensure it's buit into your timeline - otherwise, guests could spot you too soon!

Shade-wise, our musicians have a lot of options. We've set up underneath the pillars (violin/guitar duet), to the right of the guests, left of the guests, and behind the guests. Depending on the time of day, there can be plenty of shade, which is always appreciated during the height of Summer.

Example: Veronica and Brian chose this arrangement, allowing the Mansion itself to become part of their ceremony story.

Indoor Weddings at The Wadsworth Mansion

One of the reasons that I love and highly recommend the Wadsworth Mansion is because their back-up spaces for inclement weather are so beautiful.

9. The East Ballrooms

The East Ballroom provides an elegant indoor option for ceremonies. With its high ceilings and classic decor, it’s perfect for couples who want to exchange vows in a sophisticated setting.

Considerations for setup:

We have found that, with a lot of guests, it's best to have a smaller ensemble like a duet or trio. The full quartet can be a little cramped behind the chairs, which poses a safety issue as guests and vendors (like your photographer) try to sneak past to get to their seats.

10. The West Ballroom

The West Ballroom offers a slightly more intimate indoor setting. Its refined ambiance makes it an excellent choice for ceremonies year round. One of the many reasons that we love the Wadsworth Mansion is because this ballroom is often available as a backup in case of inclement weather. It's beautiful and a real lifesaver.

In Hannah and Pris' wedding, our string quartet set up in the far corner while the guests faced the mantel. It was perfection.

Each of these options provides a distinct and breathtaking experience for couples and their guests. We're so grateful to have performed in each of these incredible spaces many times and really understand the versatility of the space and how our musicians fit in. Whether you envision a ceremony steeped in nature or accented by architectural elegance, the Wadsworth Mansion has something to suit every couple’s dream.

When Yamiley and Marc tied the knot at the Avenir in Walpole, Massachusetts, it was a celebration filled with love, joy, and vibrant beauty. Our string trio was thrilled to be part of their special day and had big plans: Enchanting and romantic classical wedding music for prelude (What's Prelude Music?) and a lively cocktail hour with Bridgerton wedding music.

I first got to know Yamiley through Instagram; She was so enthusiastic and kept saying how she couldn’t wait for us to perform on her wedding day. She was so sweet! Who knew she also had a keen eye for wedding style?

Yamiley’s first big question, to me, was “Which classical wedding music group should I pick? The string quartet or the string trio?” I gave her all my tips (Which you can find here) and she decided to pick our wedding string trio with two violins and cello.

When we arrived for Yamiley and Marc’s wedding, we were absolutely floored. Our first view of the ceremony included an awe-inspiring floral display on the chuppah.

La Vie En Rose: Bold Wedding Florals

The bold, pink florals were a vivid reflection of Yamiley and Marc’s sweet and bold personalities. Credit goes to the incredibly talented OLuxeDesigns, whose creativity turned Avnenir’s wedding ceremony space into a wonderland of rose hues and romance. The stunning arrangements not only added to the visual splendor but also enhanced the overall ambiance of the celebration, continuing through the reception with high centerpieces, welcome table florals, and the bouquets.

If you’re a Real Housewives of Beverly Hills / Vanderpump rules fan, you might wonder: How fabulous are we talking? The answer: Lisa Vanderpump wishes she had these florals!

Wedding Ceremony Music by Classical Wedding Musicians: Pop String Covers of Modern Classics

The wedding party made their grand entrance to Taylor Swift’s "Wildest Dreams," evoking Bridgerton vibes. For the bride’s walk down the aisle, we performed "Can’t Help Falling in Love" by Elvis Presley (You might know the newest cover by KG, featured in Crazy Rich Asians). They created a memorable and heartfelt beginning to their union.

The pair had planned an interfaith wedding ceremony (Jewish and Catholic), to be co-officiated by their Rabbi and Reverend Father. The two spiritual leaders were quite the charismatic duo and worked together seamlessly.

Tips for Planning Your Interfaith Wedding Ceremony

If you’re a bride or groom planning an interfaith ceremony, it’s essential to consider the significant difference in timing. For reference…

  • A civil ceremony can run anywhere from 20-30 minutes (not counting processionals and recessionals). They often run longer if the couple opts to write their own vows or have special readings by friends and family members.

  • A Catholic mass is usually 45-60 minutes (leaning heavily on the latter), as it features multiple readings, hymns, and traditions like Communion, Offertory, and so on.

  • A Jewish wedding ceremony is usually around 45 minutes and features traditions like Circling (walking around the chuppah seven times), blessings in both Hebrew and English (The Seven Blessings), and a cantor who sings throughout.

Yamiley and Marc’s wedding beautifully blended Jewish and Catholic traditions, co-officiated by two spiritual leaders. This added depth and richness but also extended its length. Our friendly advice: allocate at least 45 minutes to an hour for your ceremony. Even if it’s not a full mass or service, remember that double the blessings mean double the time!

Mazel Tov! A Bridgerton cocktail hour

Interfaith Wedding Ceremony
Mazel Tov! Planned to perfection by Lavinia Paul Events

One the groom broke the glass, it was time to party at the cocktail hour. Our string trio brought a lively and elegant atmosphere during the cocktail hour with a curated set list. Our performance included upbeat pop tunes and selections from Bridgerton, adding a touch of modern flair and unexpected fun. To ensure every note was heard perfectly, we brought our custom amplification system, making sure the music flowed seamlessly throughout the space.

Months later, I was scrolling on Instagram and discovered that I wasn’t the only one who loved their wedding day: Munaluchi Bride proudly featured it on their Instagram! It’s always a delight to see one of our beautiful couple’s wedding featured!

Yamiley and Marc’s wedding at Avenir was a testament to the beauty of blending traditions and personal touches. As classical wedding musicians who have performed for over 650 weddings, we were honored to provide the soundtrack to such a meaningful and joyful occasion. It was absolutely unforgettable.

As a wedding violinist who has performed for 725 weddings over the last 15 years, I'm always helping my couples, by lifting the veil off of these traditional wedding terms. "What's Prelude Music?" is our number one FAQ, so if you've clicked this post to find out, know you aren't the only one!

Today, I'm breaking down Prelude Music and giving you real, practical advice like:

  • How to include Prelude Music in your wedding

  • Why Prelude Music exists

  • How much Prelude music you need

  • What kind of music to choose for Prelude

Let's dive in: What is Prelude Music?

Simply put, Prelude Music is the welcome music as your guests arrive on site for your wedding ceremony. Usually, it's background music that sets the scene for your wedding day.

Since it's the very first experience that your guests have at your wedding, classical wedding musicians become the unofficial welcoming committee and create the whole atmosphere and represent your style: elegant, sophisticated, romantic, upbeat and lively.

Why do I need Prelude Music?

Live musicians keep the party going and smooth over any wrinkles that come up. Wedding string quartets are a rarity, so the novelty is a distration that helps soothe wedding nerves when the timeline starts to slip.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but let's be real: Most weddings start late. The average is 5-15 minutes, but we've even played a 90-minute prelude! One time, the groom's family was caught in airport traffic because they flew in on the same day as the wedding. Another time, we kept the party going when the bride's hair and makeup team ran over an hour late.

When the highway is closed and the wedding party is stuck in traffic, musicians are the ones who keep guests' toes from tapping nervously to tapping with delight. It makes a huge difference in your guests' experience, keeping the energy up.

How much Prelude music do I need?

That depends on the number of guests you have, your venue, and the time of year. Since we're performed for hundreds of weddings, we have it down to a science.

Based on the venue
  • If you're having your wedding at a church and/or have over 100 guests, you'll want your prelude music to begin 30 minutes prior to your ceremony.

  • If you're having an outdoor ceremony at a formal wedding venue like the Wadsworth Mansion or Eolia Mansion, 15-20 minutes is plenty.

  • If you're having an indoor wedding at a formal wedding venue like The Society Room, Prelude music shoudl begin 30 minutes prior to your ceremony.

  • If you're having your wedding at a private residence, 10-15 minutes is more than enough.

Based on the nuber of guests

In general, more guests = more prelude music. The more people you have, the more likely you'll encounter the early birds (who just have to beat the traffic) and the incorrigibly late-to-everything friends .

  • If you're having 50-75 guetss, you'll want your prelude music to begin 15 minutes prior to the cermeony.

  • If you're having 100-250 guests, you'll want your prelude music to begin 30 minutes prior to the ceremony.

  • If you're having over 250 guests, you may want your prelude music to start even earlier. Consider if you are shuttling your guests or what kind of holding/waiting area your venue has before bumping above 30 minutes, though.

Based on the time of year
  • If you're having an indoor wedding in Fall or Winter, expect your guests to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your wedding.

  • If you're having an outdoor wedding in Spring or Summer, expect your guests to arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to your wedding. Think about it: When it's really hot and humid outside, people always try to limit their time outdoors.

Whenever I receive a new inquiry, I always ask these questions, so I can best advise you on the amount of prelude music you'll actually need.

How many songs should I choose?

The real answer: Pick more than you need. You never know how long prelude music will be. We often rely on having a variety of short and long songs to be able to fill specific gaps, so I don't recommend selecting an official order for your prelude music. Let your classical wedding musicians be flexible with what is happening around them.

For instance, it's very common for the venue coordinator to tell us we have two minutes before the ceremony will start, so we need to pick something that fits. It's also very common for the same venue coordinator to change their mind after those two minutes and to ask for another five!

Instead of hand-picking an entire prelude selection, most couples leave it up to us and sometimes give us a few guidelines. For example, brides often mention what kind of atmosphere they'd like and then ask us to include a few of their favorites. We have specially curated setlists with a variety of music that will speak to all of your guests.

We also take note of which songs your guests seem to be enjoying (yes, we can tell!) and often add in more like it. Since it's impossible to predict just how many songs you'll need, we fill in the blanks. We always bring plenty of extra music.

If your Prelude music is starting...

  • 15 minutes before your ceremony, choose 10-15 songs.

  • 30 minutes before your ceremony, 15-25 songs.

What kind of Prelude music should I have?

Want to sound like the classical music moments of Bridgerton?

I'd call this classical background music with an elegant feel, so ask your wedding string quartet for traditional wedding music with pieces from the Baroque and Classical era. Translation: Upbeat and light melodies, like Mozart, Handel, and Haydn. We'll sneak in a Waltz here and play excerpts from Vivaldi's Four Seasons. These should be all instantly recognizable favorites that your guests will adore.

Want something classical, yet lively and daring?

Ask your classical wedding musicians to step it up with Strauss Waltzes and sultry tangos, like Por Una Cabeza. Bold and vibrant pieces are inspiring and guests often tell me they're the most enjoyable.

Want something like the Bridgerton carriage scene? (You know the one!)

Add a sophisticated twist by asking for modern pop string covers of your favorite songs. Looking for inspriation? Check out my latest post all about including Bridgerton music on your wedding day.

Can't decide?

You can always ask for a mix of classical with contemporary music from musicals, jazz, classic rock, Disney, and today's pop hits. We often play Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling in Love, La Vie En Rose, Fly Me to the Moon, A Whole New World, and Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud. It's the sort of mix where every one of your guests will find a favorite and lean in with interest. Sometimes, they even get up to dance!
